This makes me so proud to be a Seattleite. We have standards here--no sitting on city sidewalks! no smoking in clubs! no popcorn in City Hall!--and if you jaywalk, be assured that we will ticket you.

Nice shot. It's as if you saw the evil that lurked in the heart of the bag of popcorn. Have you ever considered moving here?

David,

I'm not a lawyer nor do I play one on television. Based on my limited understanding I would have to say that simply showing prior art based on the same stories that well predates the Disney versions should establish that they were not Disney creations. Sufficiently old versions of the stories would therefore be in the public domain.

A good example might be Aladdin. Since it appears in the book The Arabian Nights was originally translated into english between 1885 and 1888 I'd have to say that the story of Aladdin is clearly in the public domain by now.

This is an excellent question and if someone does know the answer I'd love to hear it.

I was a student of Professor Rine's in that class. Now I know I am a bit biased because he is one of my favorite professors at Berkeley. But I do have a few things to say.

1) Have you checked lately how much a professor's salary is? Even the most brillant (and tenured) professors make next to nothing. Consulting is precisely how most make there living, and even then the costs of owning more than one laptop are staggering for professors. Especially biology professors.

2) All the talk of transponders and Windows product keys is true. In fact, another laptop was stolen at Berkeley recently (one that had personal data of every student, current and alumni, of this i have NO pride) and was tracked down the very same way. Don dada, you may know how to bypass all of those obstacles, but keep in mind, this theif didn't. And you're obviously not a college student, because when your academic career ends at a major university, that's not the end of the deal. Being kicked out of auniversity paints a huge permanent skull and bones on your record, and employers and just about everyone else you need to impress will avoid you like the plaque. And Professor Rine does not need to chase you down, he just needs to send the Marshalls and the rest of the law enforcement to get you and he'll have the last laugh.

3) The companies did not fire him and in fact increased his status in their inner circles. Professor Rine is was extremely brilliant consultant and professor and the companies could not afford to let someone like him go, no matter what went wrong, in which he cannot be blamed.

Hi, i'm writing a law paper that involves copyrights, disney, snow white and cinderella. Where can i find a credible source, or best legal source/reference, to show that the plot lines of snow white, and cinderella are (not the graphics cuz i know disney protects that) are in the public domain, therefore disney has no right to protect?

thanks.

Another thing that makes this more distasteful is that Tyra had the option of opting out at anytime. She knew that she really wasn't fat therefore any malicous behavior directed at her was not really directed at her but rather a fake persona she was donning.

Steve,

Thanks for following up on Golem's comments. Just for my own edification, do you object to the capitalist part or the pig part of "capitalist pig"?

I would like to know more about the cooperative aspect of Wireless Nomad. Are the co-ops bylaws available for folks to look at?

First of all, I'm not going to waste both of our time by getting into a flame war over your initial posting (although I do resent being called a Capitalist Pig), I'd like to set the record straight about a few of the things you mentioned.

I think that you may have a misunderstanding about our service. We're not asking you to maintain your existing Rogers account and continue to pay $40/month for it - we're proposing a system that allow you do do away with your Rogers account and replace it with a Wireless Nomad hookup for $30/month. We typically would accomplish this through a DSL circuit to your residence.

You're right in that not every node in our "mesh" network is a true mesh node. As the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day". We're working hard to be able to use mesh networking to help reduce the cost of Internet access for everyone, but in some cases it is necessary to use DSL instead. Each one of the nodes we set up (whether a mesh node or not) provides a local access "hot spot" that our members can sign in to, so members can log in all over the city. In addition, regular people who are not members can sign on with a free web-only account at all of our member's nodes. Since we don't have an extra charge for bandwidth the member who hosts the node pays no extra, and our system ensures that their traffic takes priority over others while they are logged in.

In terms of our guarantee, I assume you are referring to our Free Web Account Terms of Service at http://wirelessnomad.com/about/tos. Since this is a free account, I don't see how not offering a guarentee of service is in any way a bad thing. After all, the free account is provided to you for free!

I think you may have a misunderstanding of the meaning of section 13 of our Free Web Account TOS.

"13. User Grants Wireless Nomad a License to Transmit Their Content

By using this service, you grant Wireless Nomad a world-wide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license to reproduce any content you cause to be transmitted through our services, for the purpose of our transmitting that content for providing Internet services."

Our intention is that you give us the right to transmit the data you request to be transmitted through our network, not that we own the data.

Golem,

It sounds like you have some complaints about the folks at Wireless Nomad but it's hard for me to figure out what those complaints are with the way that you present them here.

Is it your contention that Wireless Nomad is not a cooperative? Or is it that their service is not what they claim it to be?

Compared to what is available here in the stats 3Mb/s sounds pretty damn good.

http://wirelessnomad.com/home/

Above is the URL for the so-called "operators" of the so-called "mesh" network.
A true mesh network uses every node as a transceiver.
The wireless nomad "co-op" "operators" are not operating a bona-fide mesh network,
their network is really a close-proximity distribution of WiFi hot-spots.
As well, they also don't gaurantee any access/dependability of connection
and everything transmitted becomes their property (see subscriber/user agreement).

(correction to my previous post: the cost is $30/month for approx 3MB/Sec
plus a $150 deposit for the WiFi router they supply if you want to be a node and
have a wired DSL connection and provide WiFi to other "subscribers".)

I am a Canadian, living in Canada's biggest city. I subscribe to 5 MB/Sec cable internet access which is rarely ever more than 3 MB/Sec and often much slower. It costs me CDN $40/month which, as the Canadian dollar's value rises against the U.S. dollar, is getting more expensive and is providing a windfall profit to my ISP.

I looked into joining a newly developing private WiFi mesh network but think it stinks because the "operators" are building it by, first, getting a local "host" to install a wireless router in their own home, connect it to the high speed internet connection they privately pay for ($40/month), keep it on continuously, pay the electricity bill, make it available to anyone, and pay the mesh network "operators" $20/month as well. The mesh network "operators" then charge others $20/month for access to the "host's" WiFi router. This arrangement is an outright rip and anyone who becomes a "host" is a fool. When I spoke with the mesh network "operator" about them paying for the "hosts'" high speed internet connection, a small amount for electricity, and not charging the "host" for access to the mesh network, they balked and said that they are trying to build a "community" and that the "host" should think of the community's interests and not their own - spoken like a true Capitalist Pig. Mesh networks need infrastructure but I won't participate in building it at my, or another individual's, expense so some sleazy privateer capitalist pig(s) can rip people off. I could save myself the $40/month by dropping my ISP and riding for free on my next-door neighbour's unsecure WiFi router but I won't because that's unethical. Instead, if I decide that I want to cut my internet access costs, I will talk to my neighbour about directly paying him to share his connection through his WiFi router. Rant, rant, rant... makes me feel better.

I am a Wireless Nomad in that I volunteer with the co-op and have helped set up subscribers and am working to find more.

There are a few more notable features that might encourage folks to check us out:

+ You're allowed to run servers (for any _legal_ purpose and within reasonable bandwidth limits)

+ Any Wireless Nomad subscriber can log on to any node and get high speed connectivity

+ All nodes offer free connectivity. The free bandwidth is limited in speed (somewhat faster than dial-up) and function (web only) but free is free. Find a node, create an account (you need an e-mail address) and surf away.

I just posted a similar comment regarding another paint utility. Paint.NET is a free software program that replaces the standard Microsoft Paint program. It has some great features in it and I use it all the time on my tablet.

I would highly reccomend getting a tablet pc as soon as you are able. They are amazing. There is absolutely nothing better than pen-based computing in a portable way (in the cafe, home on the couch, in the laundrymat...).

Feel free to check out my weblog post about Paint.NET at "Inklings and Impressions".

Yup, the man is a nut, and N. Korea is seriously dangerous and I wish it was someone with a modicum of good sense and even the slightest hint of sanity who had said something like this. But no other world leader has.

Cunnilingus is a good thing, fellatio is a good thing. Imagine what a different world we would live in if the president of the U.S. openly and actively encouraged and supported folks in having oral sex. That's my kind of world.

It is clear - North Korea is delusional. Apparently, it has dreams of taking the place of the Soviet Union simply by opposing the West. The delusion is manifest in their imagination of themselves to be of any significant importance in the world (economically, politically or culturally), as the Soviet Union certainly was.

Attempting to deal with North Korea is like attempting to perform a root canal on yourself (the latter may actually be more pleasant). By comparison, the Soviet Union then, and Russia now, is a refreshing bastion of reason and humility.
