AlterNet: Good Drugs

I found this really cool article over at Alternet.

AlterNet: Good Drugs
Researchers there at the University of Saskatchewan demonstrated that marijuana rejuvenates cells in the hippocampus, an area of the brain associated with learning and memory. Neuroscientist Xia Zhang and his team injected rats with a superpotent chemical synthesized to resemble a chemical found in a typical puff of pot. And, under the influence of this mega-marijuana, the rats started growing new brain cells.

On the upside this means that we may be looking at a very large chunk of the war on drugs being demolished.

On the downside, this could mean an end to Tommy Chongs acting career.

Terrorists stop American corporations from funding Darwin exhibit

I suppose that I shouldn’t be surprised at this but I am, and I’m angry as well. Corporate America is so afraid of getting religio-extremists all bent out of shape if the corporations support science instead of mythology. These religious extremists have so terrorized the corporations that now science education can’t even get funding. That’s what I call some damn good terrorism.

Here’s the story so far, at the American Museum of Natural History they’ve put together a wonderful exhibit on Charles Darwin. However, when they went looking for corporate sponsorship for the exhibit they couldn’t find any support.

Of course, so far this hasn’t made the news here in the good old U S of A. If you want to read about this you’ll have to go to other news sources like:

This is the kind of thing that makes me ashamed to be from the US. I guess this means that the religious extremists are winning.

Dear Tyra Banks, can you spell irony?

So here’s the news, Tyra Banks has put on a fat suit and filmed herself doing things around town and then going on blind dates. Seems that when disguised as a 350 lbs. woman folks didn’t treat Tyra the way she was used to, they were rude, they were mean, they laughed at her. And the blind dates? Seems they didn’t go all that well either. None of the guys wanted to go out with her for second dates. Tyra did all of this for her talk show, so she could find out and expose how overweight folks are treated.

Hello Tyra, all you had to do was ask.

And what do we know so far about what Tyra learned? Well seems she thinks that women aren’t as hard on fat men as men are on fat women. I don’t know what it’s like to be an overweight woman. I do know what it’s like to be an overweight man and I don’t exactly feel like I get a king’s welcome when I’m out and about. Right, but that’s not really what I wanted to write about.

Here’s what really kills me about this. Tyra Banks, professional model, host and face of the show “America’s Top Model” is complaining about how overweight people get treated.

Ok Tyra, see if you can stay with me here:

You were a professional model. The profession of modeling is at the heart of the fucked up world that judges people by what they look like.

You have a television show called “America’s Top Model.” Your own television show promotes and lifts up the idea of being beautiful means being thin even higher than it already is. Your television show tells everyone that to be successful you have to look a certain way. Pardon me but, what the hell?!

Thanks Tyra, thank you so much. I’m off to read Black Like Me so I can fully understand what it means to be black in america today.
