This Weeks Feature: D.O.A.

I’ve decided that along with featuring an episode of a serial each week I’ll try and include a feature length film as well.

Now, don’t panic about huge downloads, I’m going to link to the 64kb version so I don’t overwhelm folks.

This week I thought I would go with the classic film noir D.O.A.

It’s a wonderful mystery and quite captivating. And now, on with the show:

One more reason to move to Canada

Every once in a while there’s a convergence of information that makes me think I’m living in the wrong country or at least the wrong state.

It started with this discussion on slashdot about the problems with broadband in the U.S. Which stemmed from this article on Salon. The long and the short of it is that broadband networking (high speed internet connections) are far more expensive in the U.S. than anywhere else in the world. I’m sure that folks might want to argue with that statement, if you do, please do it on Slashdot and not here.

Then I read this article about the city of Madison, Wisconsin setting up municipal WiFi that is city-wide. How cool is that!?! Of course, at the same time my hometown is having to deal with a state legislature that wants to restrict local people’s attempts to build citizen controlled WiFi networks.

And now I read this article over on BoingBoing. Check this out, Wireless Nomad is an ISP that is also a cooperative that encourages folks to share their access.

  • It’s an ISP that does wireless!
  • It’s a cooperative (a co-op) so it’s owned and operated by the folks that use it. Chalk one up for democracy!
  • They encourage folks to share their connections!

How fucking cool is that!?!?!

Everyday Canada is looking better and better (don’t even get me started on national health care).

Dick Tracey - Chapter Two: The Bridge of Terror

Will Dick Tracey be able to defeat the attempts of the Spider Gang to destroy the bridge? Will he survive? And what about his brother Gordon?

The only way to find out is to watch this exciting episode: The Bridge of Terror.

I think my favorite bit is the “flying wing” that the bad guys have.

Cartoon - Falling Hare

Along with my fascinations for radio plays and serials I love old cartoons. Once again my jones for this kind of thing is more than met by the fine folks at over at the Internet Archive.

I’ll start off with one of the better known cartoon characters Bugs Bunny. This is on of my favorites.

Bugs Bunny: Falling Hare

Available for download and streaming here. Since I have a cartoon and a short, maybe I’ll look for a feature film to go with these and a news reel.

p.s. Yes, I do know that I’ve listed this before. But it was worth mentioning again.

Dick Tracy - Chapter One: The Spider Strikes

Two of my passions are radio plays and movie serials. You know, Dick Tracy and Dimension X, The Shadow and such. I love the lines they wrote for folks and how much fun it sounds like they had making them.

I’m not the first person to do this but I figured I’d give it a try. I’m going to feature an old movie serial each week. I’m starting with that captain of crime fighters Dick Tracy. All of the videos I will feature are in the public domain and available for download in the form you see here and some much larger formats if you want a higher quality file. All of this made possible by the courtesy of the folks at archive.org.

So, enough about me, on with the serial (warning there are some weak spots in the audio):

On the Humanity of Women

I found this amazing piece via othermag.

It is eye-opening, important, relevant, well written and insightful. I’m sure a great many people will be angry about it for some or all of these reasons. This is what touched me the most as a man:

Sex, like religion, is central to who we are, and the same pattern is repeated. Women are irrelevant. No, really. Think about it. Even the definitions give the game away. Sexually repressed women have to dress in tents. Free women can wear lipstick and thong underwear. And this is supposed to do exactly what for women? (I’m talking about heterosexuals, of course. Homosexuals don’t have to contend with the X-challenged world in quite the same way.) Being “allowed” to be attractive to men is not the same as having men who are willing to think about what a woman might want. Defining a situation in a way that works for you is freedom. Living inside someone else’s reality is not.

It isn’t always fun at the moment, but I love being forced to re-evaluate things that I took for granted. Thanks Acid Test! In case you missed it, here’s the link.

Asshattery

The title caught my eye, the content kept me reading.

Seems that some folks think that vaccinating children against HPV might encourage underage sex. That’s just damn dumb! Read more.
